"disturbed"
A disturbed portrait of phnom penh, and possibly one of the largest
photographic composites on the planet comprising of an initial set
of 1600 images, spanning some 12 metres fresh from the camera, with
what can only be described as a ridiculous level of detail, it's
literally possible to read the labels on the clothes hanging on
balconies in the middle ground, on the foreground you can pick the
insects out of the rust.
The impossible perspective is generated through the eye of a 200mm
zoom, the antithesis of how a panarama is traditionally performed,
meaning each frame has perfect perspective with no distortion but
covers only a very small area of the scene, two such frames are
displayed below. The perspective is entirely man made, with a level
horizon, each images placement was a considered decision, from the
level horizon to the 270 degree arches dropping into the shadows
of the phnom penh streets.
The closer you get to the city the less sense it makes.
Psar Thmei sits in the first third, crowning a sea of coloured rooftops,
dropping down through the eclectic phnom penh architecture, where
things begin to make less sense.
At street level the foreground is a an edgy reflection of an edgy
city, nothing quite adds up, and this is intentional, even repetitions
not being quite what they appear, one such instance bottom centre
for example shows four frames of a sale from a street vendor, the
back end of a bus [and only the back end] fills up at the station
far left. These oddities are exploited, and are a perfect reflection
of this off-kilter and endearing khmer world. |
